Workforce skills development and engagement in training through skill sets

NCVER_icon

Skill sets are a grouping of one or more competencies below the level of a full qualification that meet a client skills need, such as a licensing or compliance requirement or specific knowledge of an emerging area.

A point of debate is the role that skills sets play compared to full qualifications which are seen as the foundation of the VET system. To throw some light on this issue, John Mills and his colleagues undertook a case study of agrifood students, which investigated the use of skill sets by students enrolled in Rural Production Studies skill sets developed by TAFE NSW and those enrolled in the Diploma of Agriculture.

An Interview with Kaye Bowman on ‘Workforce skills development and engagement in training through skill sets’ has also been released.

Register now for NCVER Research Forum: Does completing matter? Understanding and measuring completions in VET

The vocational education and training (VET) system is built around industry-focused, nationally recognised qualifications, yet we experience low completion rates. Governments have recognised low completion is an issue, but we need to understand why this occurs.

To be held on Wednesday 21 November 2012 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, this one-day national research forum will look at how completion rates are measured, how governments can set up structures to increase completion rates, for whom completion matters and how skill sets fit in. Providers will also share the strategies they use to impact on completion rates.

Educating oneself out of social exclusion

Increasing education and training is considered one means by which to reduce the extent of social exclusion. This study investigates the impact of education and training on the extent of social exclusion using a multidimensional measure of social exclusion. The study finds a clear dichotomy in the extent of social exclusion experienced between those with low levels of education (early school leavers or those with a certificate II qualification at the most) and the rest.

It’s work Jim, but not as we know it…

We have been talking about for many years now how technology transforms the way students approach learning and how teachers in-cooperate this technology into their teaching practices.

More and more employers and employees are practicing workshifting (also known as Teleworking).

In March 2011, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, outlined plans to double the teleworking participation in Australia from 6% today to 12% by 2020 which may seem a tad ambitious has the teleworking uptake in Australia lags behind other developed economies.

With Australia’s first national teleworking week scheduled for later this year, a number of local thought leaders – including Seamus King, ANZ country director of Citrix – are interviewed in a recent article in HR Monthly –  Read the article here.

E-portfolio Implementation – Video Case Studies

E-portfolios are powerful tools which allow for the collation and sharing of evidence of achievement or skills to assist in recognition of prior learning (RPL) when seeking further study or employment.

Video Case studies documenting effective practice in the implementation and use of e-portfolios in the vocational education and training sector are now available to the public.
